This barn is positioned on the bluffs between Sea Ranch Lodge and the ocean. It is both a remnant of the area’s ranching heritage before it became a community of weekend vacation homes, and a reminder of the minimal aesthetic that informs the exteriors of said vacation homes. (By the way, Sea Ranch Lodge is a private concession these days, not run by the Sea Ranch Association.)
I scouted the barn when exploring beaches and nearby headlands with the kids. I came back alone at sunset, and tried to create a composition that echoed the simplicity of the barn but also gave a nod of the head to the visual richness of the Sea Ranch plateau.
