Details: In a very real sense, creating a photograph is an act of intentional design. The photograph presents a transformation of the subject so that it fits within a specific frame. Meticulous use of patterns, and understanding the boundary conditions where patterns begin and end, is crucial to this act of design. At its best, the judicious use of visual patterns transcends the original context of the photograph to become an abstraction—that is, an image with resonance, multiple contexts, and emotional appeal. Mastering patterns and learning to make abstractions is the key to becoming adept at composition.
In this presentation, I’ll examine the role and progression of patterns and abstractions in the composition of my work. The webinar will conclude with exercises and suggestions for bringing best practices for working with patterns and abstractions to build stronger compositions in your own work.
There will be ample time for Q&A.
