In Upper Antelope near Page, Arizona the sunbeams hit the slot canyon floor intermittently. Also intermittent, sand blew down in waves. The two conjoined in this 20 second exposure, with me wondering whether the risk to my camera from the scouring sand was worth the shot.

30 May 2011So, was it worth it? Did you have to get the camera cleaned after the trip? 🙂

30 May 2011@Iza, So I was seriously worried. I had the camera on a tripod and there was at least a minute of the seriously scouring sand without the lenscap on (I did three exposures at between 10 and 20 seconds each).
But no real problems. The upper end Nikon DSLRs (I was shooting with a D300) are really very well weather sealed to give credit where it is due. The lens also survived unscathed (I carefully cleaned it as best I could later on).
Certainly, my philosophy is that equipment is for using—I don’t want to be stupid about it, but I’m also going to use my camera.
Of course, the other side of the “was it worth it” equation is how well the photo came out.
